In the low-income urban communities of Tandale and Manzese, where women face daily economic challenges and limited access to dignified work, a new story of empowerment is unfolding
Local Innovation for Livelihood Resilience
As part of Global Impact Transformation sustained efforts to promote women’s economic empowerment and inclusive green growth, a continued round of Training of Trainers (ToT) through W.E.L.L (Womens' Empowerment for Livelhood and Leadership) initiative was delivered to women and girls in Tandale and Manzese. Building on a series of previous engagements, the training enhanced participants’ capacity in sustainable charcoal production using agricultural waste, advancing environmentally responsible income-generating solutions.
Following the training, the participants established a local enterprise group named Umoja wa Wanawake wa Manzese and Tandale (UWAMATA) a solidarity movement of women committed to turning knowledge into livelihoods and promoting inclusive economic development.

By converting readily available agricultural waste into charcoal briquettes, the women now have a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fuel. The solution not only reduces household costs, but also creates a new, women-led economic opportunity.This initiative contributes directly to SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by empowering women with practical green economy skills, promoting women led enterprise, and introducing environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional charcoal.
As a newly formed group, UWAMATA plans to:
- Produce and sell clean briquettes in local markets
- Train additional women and youth in the production process
- Strengthen financial independence through group savings and income generation
- Expand community awareness on cleaner energy alternatives
The training went beyond technical knowledge, it fostered confidence, leadership, and unity among women and girls who are now ready to serve as peer trainers and economic drivers in their communities. With shared purpose and group solidarity, UWAMATA is paving the way for a more inclusive, self-reliant future.
