Empowering Grassroots Women Through Sustainable Energy Innovation

Mtwara’s Southern border communities face overlapping environmental and energy challenges that threaten both livelihoods and ecosystems. According to Tanzania’s Ministry of Energy and the National Forest Policy Implementation Strategy (2021–2031), over 85% of households in the region rely on wood fuel and charcoal as their primary energy source driving widespread deforestation, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. The National Energy Compact (2025–2030) further highlights the urgent need to expand access to clean cooking and renewable energy solutions. These overlapping pressures compounded by climate stress and cross-border dynamics, position Mtwara as a priority landscape for inclusive, community-driven green innovation.

On May 2, thirty-five women in Nanguruwe were equipped with transformative green skills through a hands-on training in alternative charcoal production using agricultural and household waste. What made this session unique was not just the focus on sustainable energy, but the leaders behind it. The training was facilitated by GIT-trained Women TOT Champions, all grassroots leaders who recently completed an intensive eco-leadership program under Global Impact Transformation (GIT). In just weeks, these women transitioned from learners to facilitators, demonstrating the power of peer-led development.

"This training has opened a door I didn’t know existed. I now see waste as opportunity—not just for survival, but for a cleaner, stronger future," said Asha M., a participant and single mother of four.

"I never imagined I could lead others. Today I did, and I feel confident and proud," added Rehema J., who was previously unemployed.
 

From Waste to Wealth: A Blueprint for Scalable Climate Solutions

GIT’s grassroots innovation model is grounded in gender-responsive leadership, circular economy principles, and hands-on eco-entrepreneurship. Through our TOT approach, women are trained not only in sustainable charcoal production but also in business skills, community mobilization, and digital tracking tools. Each TOT is equipped with production kits briquette molds, presses, and instructional guides—allowing them to replicate and scale the solution in their own communities.This approach delivers measurable impact, reduces deforestation and reliance on wood fuel, cuts household emissions, improves energy access for low-income families and creates dignified livelihoods for women and youth.
