Zanzibar 23 March 2025 The serene shores of Mazizini came alive with energy and purpose as Global Impact Transformation (GIT), in collaboration with Thamini Jamii and Safeesta, successfully hosted Beach Cleanup Season 3 a dynamic environmental campaign aimed at restoring coastal beauty, promoting climate consciousness, and uniting communities through action. Held under the theme “Empowering Communities, Transforming Lives,” the cleanup brought together youth groups, community leaders, activists, and volunteers in a coordinated effort that led to the removal of over 3.5 tons of waste from the shoreline.
By the Numbers: What We Collected • Plastic bottles: 90% of total waste collected • Nylon bags: 3% • Miscellaneous (glass bottles, rubber items, etc.): 7% This staggering collection reflects the urgent need for waste management interventions and public awareness about the environmental toll of single-use plastics. Each piece collected represented a step toward protecting marine ecosystems, preserving tourism value, and restoring environmental dignity for coastal communities.
A Cleanup with a Twist What made Season 3 stand out was its innovative engagement model. Volunteers were divided into teams and participated in a gamified challenge powered by a mobile app, tracking their progress in real time. The first team to fill their bag earned a prize and, more importantly, community-wide recognition. All participants received digital certificates of appreciation, a small but meaningful token to honor their dedication, effort, and commitment to environmental stewardship.
In Their Words: Voices of Impact
“It was exciting and inspiring to be part of a team making real change,” said Asha Suleiman, a youth volunteer. “We’ve cleaned more than just the beach, we’ve ignited awareness and responsibility,” added Salim Juma, a respected community elder.
Looking Ahead: Season 4 on the Horizon
Beach Cleanup Season 3 is part of GIT’s broader commitment to environmental transformation, civic engagement, and youth empowerment. Aligned with our E-STEM (Environment + STEM) approach, the initiative bridges awareness and action by giving communities ownership in protecting their environment. With the success of Season 3, plans are already underway for Beach Cleanup Season 4, promising even greater impact, deeper community engagement, and creative approaches to environmental education and youth empowerment.
The next stop? Bigger, bolder, and more fun. Stay tuned. The shoreline is calling and GIT is answering.
