Empowering Local Action: GIT at the forefront of early warning systems

Entebbe, Uganda – March 6–11, 2025 

Global Impact Transformation (GIT) proudly participated in the 6-day Training of Trainers (ToT) on the Human Rights-Based Approach to Early Warning for Civil Society Organizations, hosted by the Eastern Africa Civil Society Network (ECONet) at Imperial Golf View Hotel in Entebbe. The training brought together diverse Peace building actors and institutions, including the African Union, East African Community, COMESA Secretariat, UNITAR, UN Human Rights Uganda, and The World Bank, alongside leading civil society organizations such as WANEP_Regional. Participants represented Civil Society from nine countries: Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia. 

Representing GIT, Program Coordinator Humphrey Evarist joined peers from across the continent to explore innovative, community-centered approaches to early warning and early response an essential step in preventing conflict and nurturing peaceful coexistence. “Our presence in this ToT reflects GIT’s growing role in regional peace building conversations. We believe early warning must be locally grounded, community-led, and rights-based. This training equips us to cascade knowledge to our national networks and strengthen our local capacity to anticipate, respond to, and prevent conflict,” said Humphrey 

A Turning Point for Regional CSO Leadership The ToT was designed to enhance the capacity of civil society organizations (CSOs) to implement effective early warning and response mechanisms that are rooted in human rights, local knowledge, and inclusive governance. Participants explored the design and operationalization of early warning systems moving beyond reactive approaches to proactive, preventative Peace building. For GIT, the training represents a critical step in scaling its conflict prevention work, enabling the organization to serve as a multiplier training other CSOs, community leaders, and youth and Women networks across Tanzania and beyond. 

Why It Matters: Civil Society at the Heart of harmonious communities 

The ToT was a bold step toward equipping civil society with the tools and confidence to anticipate and respond to conflict dynamics before they escalate. Rooted in a human rights-based approach, the training empowered participants to design and implement locally led early warning systems, grounded in trust and community engagement For GIT, this experience strengthens its capacity to Support local communities in identifying and interpreting early signs of tension, and train other civil society organizations, youth and women networks, and local leaders across Tanzania. 

As the region continues to face evolving conflict dynamics, GIT stands ready with its partners to champion local leadership and inclusive approaches, together, we are laying the foundation for more just, cohesive, and harmonious societies, as GIT continues to engage with regional and continental actors, we remain grounded in our mission: to empower communities to lead from the ground up.
