Protecting coastal ecosystems has become an urgent priority for communities across Tanzania. Coastal environments support livelihoods, sustain marine biodiversity, and contribute significantly to tourism and local economic development. However, increasing levels of plastic pollution and marine debris continue to threaten the health of these ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. In response to these challenges, Global Impact Transformation (GIT) is organizing “Waves of Change – Beach Clean Up Drive Series 4,” a community-driven environmental initiative taking place at Mbezi Beach kwa Zena in Dar es Salaam. The initiative will bring together volunteers, youth networks, environmental organizations, community groups, and local stakeholders to restore sections of the coastline while strengthening environmental awareness and community stewardship.

This collaborative approach reflects the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships in addressing environmental challenges and strengthening local solutions for climate resilience.

Plastic pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental challenges affecting marine ecosystems globally. Each year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste enter oceans and coastal environments, posing serious risks to marine biodiversity, fisheries, and public health.

Along Tanzania’s coastline, plastic debris including single-use packaging, fishing gear, and un managed waste continues to accumulate along beaches and marine habitats. These pollutants threaten marine species such as sea turtles, fish, and seabirds, while also affecting coastal livelihoods and tourism.Protecting coastal ecosystems therefore requires coordinated action that combines community participation, environmental awareness, and institutional collaboration.

The Waves of Change Beach Clean-Up Drive Series 4 represents more than a one-day environmental activity. It is a community-led initiative designed to mobilize citizens around a shared responsibility to protect the marine environment. Volunteers will work together to remove plastic waste and marine debris from the shoreline, contributing to the restoration of coastal ecosystems while promoting responsible waste management practices. At the same time, the initiative serves as an environmental education platform where participants will engage in discussions on marine conservation, plastic pollution, and practical steps communities can take to reduce environmental harm.Through this approach, Waves of Change transforms environmental awareness into practical community action.
