Since its inception, Women Empowerment, Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Livelihood (W.E.L.L.) Program has directly reached more than 1,495 people and indirectly reached over 5,000 community members across Dar es Salaam, Pwani, Mtwara, and Tanga through community outreach, peer learning, women-led training, awareness campaigns, community radio, social media engagement, knowledge sharing, and locally led livelihood initiatives. The program continues to strengthen women's leadership, expand entrepreneurship opportunities, promote green livelihoods, and build more resilient and inclusive communities.
This inspiring impact story from Handeni District, Tanga Region, showcases how GIT is translating knowledge into sustainable community action through its flagship W.E.L.L. Program. A defining feature of the program is its Training of Trainers (ToT) model, where women and girls who successfully complete GIT's capacity-building program become trainers, mentors, and community leaders, passing their knowledge and practical skills to other grassroots women. This women-leading-women approach creates a multiplier effect that strengthens local ownership, promotes peer learning, and enables the program to expand sustainably without continuous external facilitation.
Another unique feature of the W.E.L.L. Program is its innovative integration of women's economic empowerment, climate action, and circular economy solutions. Women are trained to convert locally available waste materials into eco-friendly alternative charcoal, creating green enterprises that generate income while reducing environmental pollution and pressure on natural forests. The charcoal is used within their own households to reduce energy costs and is also sold within local markets, creating additional sources of income that strengthen household economic resilience and support sustainable livelihoods.
By combining entrepreneurship, leadership development, green livelihoods, and community-led learning, the program demonstrates that investing in grassroots women and girls delivers measurable social, economic, and environmental impact. Every trained woman becomes a leader. Every new women-led group becomes a center of learning. Every community becomes stronger through locally owned solutions that continue growing long after project support has ended.
