Across the quiet coastal villages and busy streets of Mtwara, the boarder of Tanzania and Mozambique, the voices of women and girls are rising stronger, louder, and more united than ever. Through its powerful Storytelling Voices of Resilience initiative, Global Impact Transformation (GIT) is equipping women and girls with the tools to share their lived experiences, challenge stigma, and strengthen collective leadership at the grassroots level.
At the heart of the initiative is a simple belief: stories heal, empower, connect, and ignite change. Too often, the voices of women, especially survivors of gender-based violence, early marriage, or economic hardship remain silenced by fear, shame, or social norms. GIT’s storytelling workshops create safe, affirming spaces for participants to break that silence.
“I used to feel invisible. Sharing my journey helped me reclaim my power and now I speak for those who are still afraid,”
— Mwanaisha, 32, participant
Over the past five months, GIT has engaged about 248 women and adolescent girls in Mtwara through interactive storytelling circles, digital media training, and peer dialogue sessions. Participants learn how to craft their personal narratives, use their voices to support one another in healing and solidarity.
“I used to feel invisible. Sharing my journey helped me regain my confidence. Now I speak up—not only for myself but for others in my village,”
— Zuhura, 24, participant
Rooted in feminist and community-centered methodologies, the initiative recognizes storytelling as a vehicle for healing, empowerment, and advocacy. Many of the participants, survivors of gender-based violence, early marriage, or social exclusion had long been silenced by stigma or fear. GIT’s storytelling workshops offer safe, supportive spaces where their voices are not only heard but respected, validated, and mobilized. The initiative also integrates peace building, digital literacy, and rights awareness, helping women not only tell their stories but also shape the future they deserve.
The stories emerging from Mtwara are a powerful reminder that lasting progress begins at the grassroots. GIT invites partners, allies, and advocates to stand in solidarity with these women and girls, to listen, support, and invest in a future where every voice is heard, and every right is upheld.
