In the border region of Mtwara, where Tanzania meets Mozambique, GIT, in partnership with PSOSF, is implementing a bold and inclusive leadership initiative that goes beyond traditional outreach.
The Door to Door Model
Mtwara, Tanzania, on the southern edge of Tanzania, where the land meets Mozambique, a quiet revolution is taking place. In small villages, down dusty paths and within modest homes, women and girls are being called into leadership, not with fanfare or formal declarations, but with a knock at the door and a simple question: “What does leadership mean to you?” This is the heart of the Women and Girls Leadership Door-to-Door Initiative, an ongoing effort led by Global Impact Transformation (GIT) in partnership with the Perfect Spirit of Service Foundation (PSOSF). Designed as a grassroots mobilization model, the initiative is redefining how leadership development is approached in underserved communities.
While many focused on top down training and workshops, this initiative chooses a different path, it goes directly to the people, engaging women and girls in their homes and community spaces to unearth leadership where it already lives: in everyday resilience, in quiet sacrifice, and in untold ambition.
“We Do Not Have Titles, But We Lead”
Every home visited tells a new story. Rehema, a widow in her 50s, has been coordinating informal savings groups for over a decade. Without recognition or resources, she has helped dozens of women weather financial instability and grow their small businesses. “We do not have titles,” she says, “but we lead.”
Zainabu, just 17, had dreams of becoming a doctor. After losing her father, her education was at risk. “Sometimes I feel my dreams are too big for my village,” she shared. But through this initiative, she’s been connected to a mentor and a support network, rekindling her path forward.
These stories are not outliers they are reflections of a wider, often invisible network of women and girls already shaping their communities with strength, ingenuity, and hope. Beyond Awareness: Building a Movement The Women and Girls Leadership Door-to-Door Initiative is not a campaign, it is the beginning of a movement. And it is already growing.Since its inception, the initiative has reached over 78 households, engaged more than 300 women and girls, and sparked the formation of new leadership circles within Mtwara’s communities. But the vision extends far beyond these early numbers.
GIT envision this model expanding to other regions creating a ripple effect of leadership, dignity, and empowerment across Tanzania and beyond. Walking with Women and Girls The success of this initiative lies in its simplicity and sincerity. It does not assume leadership must be given it understands that leadership often needs to be seen, named, and nurtured. By meeting women and girls in their most familiar environments, the initiative dismantles barriers and restores agency. It tells women like Mama Asha, a farmer and caregiver, that her dreams of leading a cooperative are valid. It shows girls like Zainabu that their future is not limited by geography. And it tells communities that when women and girls lead, everyone rises.
This model ensures no one is left behind, not because they could not attend a meeting, but because someone came to their door and listened.
