Strengthening Women-Led Climate Solutions at Community Level

By Communication team

In response to growing climate vulnerabilities and the urgent need for locally led solutions, Global Impact Transformation (GIT) is implementing the Women’s Empowerment for Livelihoods and Leadership (W.E.L.L.) Project to strengthen women’s leadership in climate action. The initiative promotes sustainable livelihoods, environmental protection, and inclusive development across climate-affected communities in Tanzania.Through the W.E.L.L. Project, GIT is advancing community-driven climate solutions by empowering women and girls as key agents of change. By strengthening local capacities, promoting climate-smart livelihoods, and supporting environmental stewardship, the project enhances both economic resilience and long-term sustainability at the grassroots level.

As part of this commitment, GIT recently conducted a field visit to Handeni District in Tanga Region, engaging members of the Tuchangamke  Group in hands-on training on alternative charcoal production, a climate-smart solution that reduces deforestation, lowers carbon emissions, and improves household incomes.

The field engagement focused on equipping women with practical skills to produce environmentally friendly fuel alternatives, contributing to cleaner energy use and sustainable natural resource management. The activity also provided space for reflection, learning, and joint planning to strengthen implementation and scale impact. The visit was graced by the Ward Executive Officer, underscoring the importance of collaboration between local government structures, civil society, and community-based groups in advancing climate resilience and sustainable development. Together, participants reviewed progress, identified emerging challenges, and agreed on priority actions to enhance women’s leadership in climate-smart livelihoods.

Scaling Impact Across Vulnerable and Underserved Communities.

Beyond Tanga Region, GIT continues to expand its work with women and girls across some of Tanzania’s most climate-vulnerable and underserved areas. Through the W.E.L.L. Project and related initiatives, GIT has supported the establishment and strengthening of women-led groups in Bagamoyo District (Coastal Region) promoting sustainable livelihoods and climate-resilient economic activities, Mtwara Region, including communities along the Tanzania–Mozambique border, where climate shocks and energy poverty disproportionately affect women and Girls, as well as in Dar es Salaam, particularly in Tandale and Manzese, where women and girls face compounded challenges linked to urban poverty, environmental degradation, and limited access to clean energy.

Across these locations, GIT works closely with communities to promote alternative energy solutions, green entrepreneurship, leadership development, and environmental conservation, ensuring that women and girls are not only beneficiaries, but leaders of climate action and local transformation.

Advancing Gender-Responsive and Locally Led Development

The W.E.L.L. Project reflects GIT’s commitment to gender-responsive, locally led, and sustainable development approaches. By investing in women’s skills, leadership, and economic opportunities, the initiative contributes to:
•    Reduced environmental degradation and deforestation
•    Increased household income and livelihood security
•    Stronger community ownership of climate solutions
•    Enhanced participation of women and girls in decision-making processes

These efforts align with national development priorities and global commitments on climate action, gender equality, and sustainable development.
